Egyptian football team postpones game in West Bank

Cairo, March 21, 2010 (Pal Telegraph) - A visit by the Egyptian Olympic football team to Palestine has been postponed, reported the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper last week. The team were due to travel to the occupied West Bank next Sunday to play a friendly against the Palestinian national team at the Faisal al-Husseini stadium in al-Ram, near Jerusalem.

egypt_footballThe visit had been approved by the Egyptian FA but garnered condemnation within the country, centring around the possible need for the players to be issued with Israeli visas."If our team go there with Israeli visas, it will be a clear endorsement of their occupation of Palestine," says Ahmed Omar Hashem, head of the People's Assembly religious affairs committee. Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, but anti-Israel sentiment still runs high in the country. When renowned television presenter Amr Adib opened the matter for discussion during his talk show, the majority of viewers phoning in expressed opposition to the idea.

After the postponement the EFA chairman, Samir Zaher, declined to disclose the exact reasons for the decision: "We were hoping to show our solidarity with the Palestinian people but the current circumstances will not allow us to play that game this month." The former Egypt defender and Under-21 head coach, Hany Ramzy, emphasised the quandary for football in the Middle East: "We are totally against normalising relations with Israel; we just wanted to support Palestine and its people."

News Roundup: Saleh, Keshkesh may be on the move, Women's National Team jumps in FIFA rankings

Palestine, March 18, 2010 (Pal Telegraph)- Apfaccording to rumors in the Egyptian Press, Ramzi Saleh might be on the verge of a move to Arab Contractors (Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab) that would guarantee him playing time. The proposed deal would send defender Basim Ali to El-Ahly in exchange for already on-loan Ateya Al-Belqasi and Ramzi Saleh. Ramzi Saleh lost his starting job after being injured in preseason. The role was handed to youth team player Ahmed Abdel-Mounem and Saleh was not given an opportunity to win the job back, despite some impressive play that had earned him a Player of the Month Award and helped El-Ahly retain the Premier League crown.

Saleh's situation worsened when the club brought in Sherif Ekramy during the transfer window Saleh was even seen playing and scoring as a forward during one training session. Ramzi Saleh has said that he is currently studying offers from Egypt and other Arab Leagues.

Ahmed Keshkesh who has five league goals to his name with Wehdat might be looking for a new club as well. Negotiations to renew his one-year contract have not started and the player has complained that his goal tally has suffered as a result of playing most the season out on the wing. No clubs have contacted Keshkesh to enquire about his services.

The Women's National team has achieved a ranked status for the first time thanks to their improved displays at the WAFF tournament. They are now ranked 87th in the World and 17th in Asia.

Over in Europe... Imad Zatara played 20 minutes as a substitute in Nîmes disastrous 4-1 loss to Châteauroux. They now lie 6th in the league 5 points behind FC Metz for the final promotion place. Omar Jarun's hunt for first division football was boosted as he started and played all 90 minutes of Pogon Szczecin's 0-0 draw against Flota Swinoujscie. Pogon still hold the final promotion place over Lodz due to goal difference.

Palestine's football pride

Palestines_football_pride

World, March 18, 2010 (Pal Telegraph,BBC)- For most people living in the Palestinian territory, everyday life revolves around the ongoing conflict with Israel. But Palestine's football team is involved in a different sort of struggle - qualifying for the World Cup.

Palestine was granted nation status by Fifa in 1996, even though there is no Palestinian state.

They remain in a strong position to qualify for the 2006 tournament in Germany, having beaten Taiwan 8-0, drawn 1-1 with Iraq and lost 3-0 to Uzbekistan, who currently top the group.

For many of the players, being able to represent Palestine is a political statement.

"In my first game, when we sang the national anthem, I could feel my body shiver," goalkeeper Ramzi Saleh told BBC World Service's Playing for Palestine programme.

"I was trembling when I saw the Palestinian flag being raised. I felt I had done something great for my country that day."

Training camp

Although the players represent a people longing to be recognised as a fully-fledged nation state, the conflict means they play their "home" games in Doha, Qatar.

Many of the players learned to love football when they watched matches between Arabic teams, particularly Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek.

Palestinian refugees

We wanted to send a message to the whole world that we can still stand on our feet, and that we want peace

But they themselves were usually unable to play in any organised competition. There is currently no Palestinian league. At the height of the first Palestinian uprising, the intifada, many believed they would not play football again.

"When the first intifada began in 1987, everything stopped," captain Saeb Jendeya said.

"I was 12, and there was no way I could join a football club, because of the obstacles posed by the Israeli occupation.

"After the first intifada I never completed my education. I would drop my books and go out and throw stones. We couldn't sit still while our people were being killed."

After the peace process in the 1990s brought relative stability, Palestine were admitted into Fifa. At that time, it was easier for players to travel between West Bank and Gaza to train together.

But then came the 2000 intifada which is still raging today, with large parts of the infrastructure in the Palestinian territory destroyed and with restrictions placed on the movement of people within the area.

It has become increasingly difficult to simply get the team together.

There are no training camps in the West Bank and Gaza Strip any more, and the FA have instead set up a training camp in Ismailia, in Egypt.

In the most tragic episode affecting the team, talented midfielder Tarek al-Quto was killed in the violence.

However, six months ago a group of Palestinian businessmen from abroad, headed by Tayseer Barakat, approached the Palestine Football Association with an offer of help.

Mr Barakat said that the PFA informed him that they could not afford to travel, to train the team, or to get an international coach to help.

"We thought that by sponsoring the national team, we could help in paying for a good coach, assistant coach, and finding a camp outside Palestine," he said.

"So that's what we did... whatever the national team needs, the money is there."

Foreign input

With money available, the next step for the PFA was to hire a professional coach. They selected Austrian Alfred Reidl, who at the time was in charge of Vietnam.

When Reidl signed his contract in Ismailia in January, it was the first time that his players from the West Bank had seen those from Gaza in three years.

Girls in the ruins of Jenin

The team was in Egypt preparing for a match with Kuwait when the battle for Jenin began

"This was a big surprise for me," he said.

"For me they are brave, they are good guys."

A further boost for Reidl was finding that he could select players drawn from the occupied territories and refugee camps, but also a contingent of professional players from South America.

He has made a number of efforts to encourage players of Palestinian ancestry to sign up for the team, including taking out an advert in the German football magazine Kicker.

On such player is Ricardo Abdullah, from Santiago de Chile, who has played with Palestine for three years. He does not speak Arabic, but qualifies through his grandfather. As Palestine play in Qatar, he has never visited the territory he represents.

"I realised how difficult life was for them when in Chile, one of the players, Jamal, was watching TV and saw his home being demolished by an Israeli tank," Abdullah told Playing for Palestine.

"But still, he trained with us normally, and gave 100% effort, while knowing that his house doesn't exist anymore.

"That's when I realised that these players are used to another reality. They are stronger than us because they can deal with these problems."

Meanwhile team captain Saeb Jendeya said that his "worst moment" had been watching the television in a training camp in Cairo when Israeli troops went into the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin.

"That day, we couldn't stand on our feet," he recalled.

"We wondered what we doing there while all this was going happening at home."

He added that he feared the team would be criticised for playing while crisis raged in the Palestinian territory.

"As captain I was trying to hide my emotions from the players, but I couldn't," he said.

"I went to the management, and told them that the players wanted to go home - they wanted to be with their families and people. But they talked us out of it. They told us that we also had a mission.

"So we stayed on, because we wanted to send a message to the whole world that we can still stand on our feet, and that we want peace."

Triumphs

There have been triumphs, however.

Palestinian players
Palestine are currently ranked 121 in the world
Few gave them much of a chance when they entered their first major tournament in 1999, the Arab Cup, a year before the intifada broke out.

"No-one cared about sports," Jendeya said.

"We did well and came third. We got the bronze medal. We were competing against Arab teams that had far more ability than we did.

"The football association had no money for plane tickets, and we were expecting to go back by land. But on the day we were supposed to leave, Yasser Arafat sent us a special plane."

When they returned home, 60,000 came to the airport.

"We were so touched that people were proud of us because we felt that we had achieved something with very little," Jendeya added,

"That was one moment I'll never forget."

Jordan International Coaching Clinic Concludes with 27 Palestinian coaches taking part

Ward_Jamal

Palestine, March 15, 2010 (Pal Telegraph)- Under platinum sponsorship from the Modern Scientific and Electronic Company (MOSECO Nokias International Agent in Palestine), one of the leading companies of MOSECO Group in Information and Communications Technology and golden sponsorship from IntermedPal and Aramex, Palestine: Sports for Life successfully wrapped up its first project, having arranged for 27 Palestinian basketball coaches to participate in the Jordan International Basketball Coaching Clinic with Ganon Baker.
The coaching clinic proved to be unique in many ways, as it is the first of its kind in the region to be officially acknowledged by the West Asia Basketball Association and Jordan Basketball Federation. The clinic was attended by 165 coaches, representing 15 different nationalities, and 10 different countries including Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Nigeria, and Serbia.
Palestine: Sports for Life (www.PS4L.org) took the initiative to call on qualified coaches, and provided the sufficient funds to cover almost all costs associated with the clinic, through the platinum sponsors MOSECO, and the golden sponsors IntermedPal and Aramex.
Al-Riyadi Club in Jordan, under the leadership of Fadi AlSabbah Secretary General, was able to successfully organize the coaching clinic over 3 consecutive days, each of which was dedicated to a specific field role (Point Guard, Shooting Guard/Small Forward, and Power Forward). Ganon Baker carried out theoretical and practical examples, in addition to video demonstrations of NBA players in action.
The clinic has also provided the Palestinian coaches with an opportunity to meet fellow coaches, exchange experience, and organized friendly matches amongst them.
PS4L will be organizing a dinner invitation for the members of the Palestinian team who participated in the clinic, in addition to representatives of the sponsors, to celebrate this important achievement.
The following are the names of the Palestinian Coaches who participated in the coaching clinic through PS4L:

Egypt to play friendly with Palestinians

Egyptian_Football_Association-logo-2553E667C7-seeklogo.com.jpg

CAIRO, March 3, 2010 (Pal Telegraph,BM) - Egypt announced that it will travel to the occupied West Bank on March 28 to play a friendly match against the Palestinian national football team. The game will feature Egypt's Olympic team and will be played at Faisal al-Husseini stadium in al-Ram, a town near Jerusalem as part of the Palestinian Land Day celebrations.

According to reports in local Egyptian newspapers, Muslim members of the Egyptian delegation will pray at al-Aqsa mosque, while the team's coach Hani Ramzy and other Christians part of the squad will pray at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in what is largely seen as an unprecedented move by the Egyptian government.

It comes only weeks after Egypt refused to play the Israeli national team in a friendly match, saying it would signal cultural normalization, an idea that is largely seen in Egypt as counter to the public sentiments toward the Jewish state.

The Egyptian Football Federation said that it is hoping the Palestinian Authority or the Israeli Embassy in Cairo will help with permission, including visas, in order to allow the Egyptian team safe passage into the West Bank via Jordan. The federation added that this will ensure the delegation does not have their passports stamped by the Israeli government upon entering the West Bank.

Not everyone is praising the decision to play the friendly, however, as one Muslim Brotherhood member of Parliament Ibrahim Abu Awf demanded Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif intervene and suspend the match. He said that the journey to Jerusalem would be "ill-advised" and that the two nations should instead play the match in Gaza.
