altKABUL, Afghanistan , July 7, 2010 (Pal Telegraph- Agencies)-An official says British troops are to withdraw from a tumultuous district in southern Afghanistan, turning over responsibility to U.S. forces.

The Sangin valley in Helmand province has been one of the deadliest for British forces, accounting for a large portion of the 312 soldiers killed since 2001.

altBEIJING, July 5, 2010 (Pal Telegraph- Agencies)- A US geologist was sentenced to eight years in jail in China on Monday on state secrets charges related to the sale of a database about China's oil industry, a US official and a rights group said.

US Ambassador Jon Huntsman, who attended Monday's sentencing in Beijing, expressed dismay over the punishment for Xue Feng and will continue to discuss the case with Chinese officials, US embassy spokeswoman Susan Stevenson said.

"The US government has concerns over Dr Xue's wellbeing. We remain concerned with his rights to due process under Chinese law," Stevenson told AFP.

Suspected_US_strike_kills_13_in_northwest_PakistanPakistan, June 19, 2010 (Pal Telegraph- Agencies)- A suspected U.S. missile strike killed 13 people Saturday in a Pakistani tribal region where several militant outfits are bent on attacking Western troops across the Afghan border, officials said.

A roadside bomb aimed at police elsewhere in the country's volatile northwest killed a civilian and wounded eight people.

The attacks came as U.S. special envoy Richard Holbrooke met with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in Islamabad, the latest in a series of visits aimed at shoring up Pakistani support for the American effort in Afghanistan.
