NGO coalition denounces Israel for obstructing travel of 4 Polish MPs

Brussels, Belgium - March 28, 2010 (Pal Telegraph) - The harassment of four Polish MPs at Ben Gurion Airport when leaving Israel after visiting the Occupied Territories (Gaza Strip and West Bank) was an unwarranted insult, the Brussels-based European Campaign to End the Siege of Gaza (ECESG) said in a statement today.

"The inspection that caused the Polish parliamentary delegation to delay their flight home was intentional and totally without cause," Dr. Arafat Shoukri, chair of the campaign, said in the statement. "This is just one more example of deliberate Israeli harassment of internationals, to prevent them from seeing firsthand the conditions on the ground. However, European officials, who have invested significantly in meeting the basic survival needs of the Palestinians – a responsibility that should be borne by the occupying power – have every right to assess the situation. And Palestinians have the right to tell their side of the story. The international community should object in the harshest terms possible."

The MPs, including Jolanta Hipinska, president of the Polish parliamentary advocates for the Palestinian people, had traveled to the Gaza Strip through Egypt with the ECESG in January, and had then visited the West Bank and met with members of the Palestinian Legislative Council. Upon leaving Israel via Ben Gurion Airport, the delegation members were inspected and delayed long enough to postpone their flight.

Omar Faris, head of Polish-Palestinian Friendship Society and member of the ECESG, said: "This was an insult to the entire country of Poland, since it targeted their representatives in parliament."

Fares accused the Israeli occupation authorities of seeking to impose international isolation on the Palestinian people, preventing them from communicating with parliamentarians and other members of the international community.

The ECESG (www.savegaza.eu) is an umbrella body of non-governmental organizations across Europe that advocates the fundamental right of the Palestinian people in Gaza to live in peace and dignity without being subjected to any form of collective punishment such as the cutting of supplies of food, fuel and medicine or their denial of free access to travel outside Gaza Strip. The ECESG supports the restoration of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people in Gaza and lobbies for pressure to be exerted on the occupying power to lift its siege and end the human tragedy there. It urges the participation of politicians and non-politicians alike to honor their duty to stop the suffering of 1.5 million people trapped in Gaza under the most inhumane conditions.
