West Bank, January 23, 2010 (Pal Telegraph) - Two separate incidents of fighting broke out in East Jerusalem and Nabih Salih, a town near Ramallah, as George Mitchell, the US envoy to the Middle East continues efforts to bring about a peace agreement between Israelis and the Palestinians
In East Jerusalem hundreds of activists gathered for what has become a weekly event in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. They were protesting a Jewish takeover of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem, done largely through the use of ownership documents dating from the period of the British mandate in Palestine.
Police notified the group that their protest was illegal, and then went about dispersing them, while arresting some. During the police intervention, fighting broke out between Palestinians and Jewish settlers and one Palestinian man received a head injury and was taken away in a Palestinian ambulance.
In separate clashes near Ramallah, Palestinian protestors coincided their march with the arrival in Ramallah of Mitchell.
